Ahead of the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget Statement, Suzanne Wylie, Chief Executive at NI Chamber has said:
“NI Chamber’s latest research indicates that business conditions in Northern Ireland have become increasingly challenging in recent months. While most companies are still trading reasonably, our latest Quarterly Economic Survey indicates growing levels of concern around key issues, particularly taxation and access to labour.
“Businesses acknowledge the need to stabilise public finances and support investment in, and reform of, public services. This will require carefully balanced decision-making when it comes to raising revenue to do this. Our small businesses in particular are concerned about increasing costs.
“Ahead of the Budget, the Prime Minister has indicated that the government will increase the ability to borrow and invest in infrastructure across the country and we look forward to seeing what that will mean for NI. He has also promised to take a long-term view and specifically, take a partnership approach to growing the economy, and of course we welcome this.
“However, it is clear that difficult decisions are ahead and in this Budget Statement the Chancellor must address falling business confidence and act to quell growing concerns about competitiveness and the cost of doing business.”
