Thursday 1st August was Cycle to Work Day, and a small team from Charles Brand undertook the 100km commute from Coleraine to their Rosemount House HQ in Belfast.

Charles Brand builds innovative and efficient infrastructure that underpins daily life, supports and protects communities, and fosters economic growth, working across rail, water, marine, and utilities.

The Team, including Managing Director Niall McGill, Sustainability Manager Andy Bate and Tony O’Neill from the Rosemount Wellness Hub, cycled the 100km to raise money and awareness for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Right now, more than 3 million people are living with cancer in the UK. By 2030, this figure is expected to rise to 4 million. Macmillan strives to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as possible by offering physical, financial, and emotional support. Almost 98% of their work is funded by donations. They raise money to provide vital cancer services, research, and campaigns to improve cancer care and support the cancer workforce.

Unfortunately, some of us have recently witnessed first-hand the impact of their work, as Niall’s father-in-law passed away earlier this year. The launch of the EPIC Sustainability Strategy in July combined with participation in the Cycle to Work event and helping raise funds for charity, felt like a meaningful tribute. The Strategy focuses on Environment, People, Integrity and Creativity with Niall leading the company Engagement Group, which seeks to further enhance engagement and collaboration towards social and environmental initiatives.

Niall said, “Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity which has become close to my heart, as it sadly has for many.  The work they do is incredible and being able to do something in return with the support from colleagues has been amazing. The team came together to help organise the event and even had a welcoming party on our arrival at Rosemount.” To date, £3,392 has been raised, with the donation link still open for contributions: https://www.justgiving.com/page/charles-brand

“The generosity of friends, colleagues and the wider business community has been heartwarming.  Many of our supply chain partners have donated and the words of support were brilliant. With the launch of our Sustainability Strategy and our first successful event, follow us for bigger things to come,” said Niall.  “We want everyone to be part of something EPIC”
