Fibrus, the Belfast-based full fibre broadband provider, has today unveiled the next phase of its commercial roll-out, targeting 125,000 premises in North East England.

The company has identified some 40 towns and villages in Northumberland and Durham, including Blyth, Ashington, Newton Aycliffe and Morpeth, that will benefit from its full fibre offering.

Fibrus last month confirmed it had already delivered full fibre to 250,000 premises in rural and underserved areas of Northern Ireland and Cumbria, adding that its goal is to pass 400,000 by March 2024. The firm has a clear strategy of investing its own capital in regional towns and villages alongside government-funded rural roll-outs.

In Northern Ireland, the company is well into the second half of Project Stratum – a £197m contract to deliver gigabit capable broadband to around 85,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses in the region. The collaboration, which was part-financed by the UK Government and NI Executive, means that already over 50,000 premises have access to full fibre gigabit capable broadband.

Meanwhile, in Cumbria, Fibrus will release its first homes under the BDUK Project Gigabit contract in June.

Finally, Fibrus has also today announced the appointment of Chief Strategy Officer, Luke Rowett. He will be responsible for delivering Fibrus’ strategy to be the broadband provider of choice in the rural and regional areas in which it operates. Rowett will also lead on mergers and acquisitions and partnerships. He joins Fibrus with over 17 years’ experience in mergers and acquisitions, growth leadership, and management, across rapidly growing sectors including TMT, Infrastructure and Utilities.

Rowett said:

“I’m delighted to kick off my career with Fibrus announcing our plans for the North East of England.

“This expansion is an opportunity to grow our customer base into Durham and Northumberland, bringing quality service and reliable connectivity at affordable prices, building on our winning formula working already in Northern Ireland and Cumbria.”

With plans to invest a staggering £700m, the company remains focused on bringing essential technology to homes and businesses in the remote UK towns and villages that need it most.

The Northern Ireland company also said it hoped the investment in network quality and customer experience will enable it to continue to grow penetration.
