Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough is celebrating an impressive success after five towns and villages received accolades at the Translink Ulster in Bloom 2023 competition.
Both Randalstown and Ballynure achieved first place wins while a Special Award crowned Antrim as ‘Most Improved’.
The much-loved annual horticultural, environmental, and community awards officially recognise the most beautiful plant and floral displays across cities, towns, and villages.
The five successful towns and villages in Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s area achieved their accolades across six prestigious categories:
Small Town: Randalstown – 1st Place
Town: Antrim: – 2nd Place
Small Village: Ballynure – 1st Place
Small Village: Ballyeaston and Toome – joint 3rd Place
Special Awards: Antrim – Most Improved
Community Champion: Richard Wallace (Ballynure and District Friendship Group) – Winner
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Councillor Mark Cooper BEM was delighted to hear the results: “This annual competition is a wonderful demonstration of community spirit that highlights the fantastic work and dedication of local volunteers, as well as our own staff.
“The hours spent planning, planting, and pruning also make a massive positive impact on the wider environment by supporting biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability.
“It improves the quality of life for our local residents. Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is proud to have obtained a number of awards at this year’s competition.
“A special congratulations must go to Richard Wallace, who has been recognised for the lasting and positive difference that he has made in the village of Ballynure by embracing the Ulster in Bloom ethos.”
The Translink Ulster in Bloom competition is co-ordinated by the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA).
