Meath County Council, in partnership with leading Belfast and Dublin-based consultancy firm Quadra, is proud to announce it has achieved certification to ISO50001 International Standard for Energy Management. This significant milestone underscores the Council’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and environmental stewardship.

A Strategic Energy Management System

Through a strategic collaboration with Quadra, Meath County Council conducted a comprehensive gap analysis to align its current energy management practices with the rigorous requirements of the ISO50001 standard. Following this, Quadra assisted the Council in developing a comprehensive energy management system, paving the way for the successful certification on their first attempt.

The certified energy management system has not only streamlined Meath County Council’s compliance with energy regulations, but it brings many benefits to Meath County Council, including improved energy efficiency and cost savings, reduction of wasted energy and environmental impact, as well as enhanced employee engagement and awareness.

Driven by Legislative Mandates for Climate Action

This achievement is part of a broader initiative driven by new climate change legislation that mandates local authorities to upgrade their energy management protocols. Meath County Council is at the forefront of this initiative, setting a precedent for effective energy management and compliance with environmental regulations.

Expanding Impact Across Local Governments

Encouraged by this success, Quadra is currently in discussions with several other local authorities to promote the adoption of ISO50001 standards in Ireland, furthering the impact of sustainable energy management across the region.

Gavin Kane, Quadra Director

“We are immensely proud to have supported Meath County Council in achieving ISO50001 certification on their first attempt. This accomplishment not only highlights the Council’s dedication to advanced energy management but also sets a benchmark for other local authorities. Our strategic approach in analysing and upgrading the Council’s energy systems exemplifies how targeted interventions can lead to significant, sustainable outcomes. We are excited to extend this expertise to other regions, advocating for widespread adoption of energy management standards that support environmental and legislative goals.”

Meath County Council (Phil Ward, Meath County Council Energy Officer)

“Securing the ISO50001 certification on our first attempt is a testament to the robust energy management strategies we have implemented, which are crucial for our commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership. Our partnership with Quadra has been instrumental in achieving this standard, allowing us to streamline our energy use and reduce our environmental impact significantly. This certification is not just an accomplishment but a pivotal step forward in our ongoing efforts to respond proactively to climate change legislation and set a positive example for other local authorities.”
