NI Chamber responds to King’s Speech

17th Jul 2024

Commenting on the King’s Speech, Suzanne Wylie, Chief Executive, NI Chamber said:

“We welcome the strong focus on growth in the new government’s early plans, which is vital to give businesses the confidence they need to invest.

“While many of the measures announced in the King’s Speech are devolved matters, UK government policies have a significant role to play in boosting Northern Ireland’s competitiveness and facilitating economic growth. In preparation for this new term of Parliament, NI Chamber has worked extensively with businesses to identify the Westminster-based policy levers which will have the greatest impact on economic growth including boosting competitiveness, access to people and skills, reducing near market red tape and providing specific support to high-growth sectors.

“Much of what was announced today resonates with NI Chamber’s key asks around a renewed partnership between government and business.  Commitment to an Industrial Strategy is to be welcomed as is the intention to reform the apprenticeship levy. We are also heartened to see that the government has pledged a reset in its trade and investment relationship with European partners. With a razor-like focus on reducing trade barriers to support common objectives like food and energy security, there is an opportunity now to move at pace to address the challenges that are unique to Northern Ireland.

“By prioritising stability, certainty and simplicity for trade and investment, this government has an opportunity to drive growth which will have a positive impact on businesses across NI.”
